It's the second most popular cosmetic surgery followed only behind liposuction. But getting breast implants usually means some bleeding, scarring, and a week or two off work. But Healthline 3's Beth Fisher found a cutting edge procedure that is changing all that.
Breast augmentation has been around for decades, but it's the way women are getting those implants that's changed. The Healthline 3 team found a Las Vegas doctor who is doing a new procedure called TUBA.Bottom line, women can now get breast implants without a scar to show for it. "And I wanted to do something to improve myself." So Allie decided to get breast implants.
But instead of opting for the traditional surgery, she's having a procedure called TUBA.
TUBA stands for Transumbilical Breast Augmentation, a procedure in which breast implants are inserted through the navel.
"So one of the benefits of the surgery is obviously one incision in the belly button versus the traditional techniques of breast augmentation requiring one incision on each breast, under the arm-pit, or under the breast." Dr. Ryan Mitchell is the first surgeon in the valley to offer the procedure. "We certainly have less bleeding. There is a faster recovery time patients can go back to work within 3-4 days."
So how exactly does it work? A small incision is made in the patient's naval. A thin tube is then inserted.
Once a clear a path is carved from the naval to the breast, the implants are rolled up, put into a tube so they can be guided through the belly up into place. The tube is pulled out, and the implants are filled with saline.
"Does the TUBA procedure prohibit you in terms of the size of implant you put in?" "Absolutely not. You can use any size implant that the patient desires."
The TUBA procedure takes about 45 minutes to perform and patients are sent home only hours later.
Just one week later... "You're doing well? "Perfect." Allie says she's very happy with the results.
"I made the best decision, definitely, I did not want any scarring and you know why have scars when you don't have to and um it just turned out really natural looking, too."
Allie says she was walking around on the second day and already shopping on the third day. Dr. Mitchell says the TUBA procedure has been around since the early 90's, but that it's gaining popularity on a monthly basis. The TUBA procedure costs 5,000 dollars and it can only be used for breast augmentation, not a breast lift. For more information on TUBA, contact Dr. Ryan Mitchell at 896-6043.
